Race report and week summary

Sunday 18th October 2015

The wind is not behaving itself in our frostbite series and keeps teasing the fleet with a very light air of unexpectancy and no wind to sail. However as with the previous week and after much towing of boats out from the harbour it again picked up and allowed our OOD David who was in the committee boat and setting a water based start.

These do seem to be proving popular but we need to sort a few teething problems of hearing hooters and flag visibility, get that sorted and we may have a winner. A good turn out on what was a cool start to the day and the fleet were hoping that our referee in the form of OOD David would be making better decisions than the ref at Saturday nights Wales quarter final game.

Oh well I suppose we still make better Welsh cakes than those Argentineans but of course we are here to sail and not to bake off. The fleet consisting of 9 boats in 4 classes is great for this time of year and also included new members Chris and Jamie Ebsworth sailing in a Laser 2000 who I am sure are going to continue enjoying the ever growing membership down here at Saundersfoot Sailing Club.

The veterans of previous encounters were back on the water after their stint in the officer boats last week, unfortunately they do not seem to be getting the wind that is required to push those competitive Contenders to the front, but as always they are very hard to beat in the form of Maurice and Simon.

Good to see Harry back on the water this week after a resting weekend and he was back mixing it with Steve in the Vision, if only Harry would let dad Steve put that Asymmetric up a bit more I am sure it would help their placing even though he does well as it is.

The wind sort of picked up and it seems most sailors enjoyed a trip round the bay including visitor Rob in another Laser, maybe it will be Laser Nationals next year. I did overhear a few murmurs of oh they are back as the Love Boat skipped across the waves out to the start line, love was definitely in the air as with new bathroom in place and a week in a hospitality flat at Waters Edge ensured they they certainly looked up for a win today.

That twinkle soon disappeared from their face though as junior ace Ben came cruising through the harbour entrance in his highly polished race ready Laser Radial, and all equipped with latest Go Pro technology to record the event.

A few laps later and a bit of tussling with the new club PB2’ers in the form of Mark and Trish in the Tasar and Malcolm in the Graduate ended with a 1st place for Ben in his Radial, 2nd Paul and Julia in the RS200 aka Love Boat, 3rd Simon aka Perky in the Contender.

Well done and thanks to David and Terry on OOD along with Tom, John, Steve and Hywel on rescue.

Saturday Sailing

There were a few who took to the water this Saturday for some fun social sailing organised by club trainer Jo who was on hand to offer advice on improving and tweaking those sails if required. No regular plans for this but best to keep an eye on the Facebook posts.

Next Race

Sunday October 25th Race start 15.00 with Mick and Terry in charge.

Socials

Details of all socials can be found on the website or on Facebook or by contacting Nina Mammatt direct via her email as social secretary which can be found on the website.

Don’t forget prize giving this Saturday which starts at 8pm in the clubhouse, no tickets required but it will be busy so get there early to hear Dinghy Captain Paul who I seem to remember told us that if Wales did not get to the quarter finals would sing a rendition of Delilah impersonating Tom Jones so that’s one not to be missed.

Both Nina and Jo are taking orders for tickets to the Xmas social with tickets costing £20.00 each which is great value and also promoting the Halloween Party on Saturday 31st October with the ever popular fireworks from the harbour.

Jo also has an excellent range of clothing with club badges that she seems to be very busy taking orders for so don’t miss out on those and contact Jo as soon as possible as they may make a good dare I say it Xmas present.

Gossip

Good to see new members Chris and Jamie out this week who it is rumoured may be going down the Laser 1 route so watch this space and the Love boat crew are back in the bath again so they are all smiles and it seems Hywel will be staying with the Laser fleet for another year so not good news for us golden oldies following him behind.

Photos show Rosie out enjoying the sailing on Saturday and a prizie giving promotion.
