Race report

Sunday 7th June 2015

It has been a busy few weeks for some but the club has managed to organise a very successful Coppet Week sailing event, as always though the members give up their time to help assist but normally at the expense of club racing for a couple of weeks. Well this Sunday the regulars were chomping at the bit to start the mid season racing and in conditions that looked good but could have done with a little more wind than turned up on the day.

A couple of the fleet were late on the starting blocks including Commodore Martin who assisted a fisherman in distress with his car up to it’s door sills in salty water trying in vain to get the wheels to turn in the slippery sand and then get that fishing boat out at the same time.

Luck would have it that harbour heavy duty tractors came to help and we were out under the watchful eye of Tom ( I’m watching you ) Owen on OOD duty with Ann assisting. Flags and hooters seemed to go off in unison with no problems and all was well as the start flag was hoisted, the hooter sounded across the bay but alas the fleet drifted over the line apart from Super Mario in the form of Keith ( I’m back ) Jones who with his light weight Aero shot off into the distance leaving all in his wake including the new master Maurice in the Contender.

11 Boats started and 10 finished with one retirement of Harry and Steve in the Vision, possibly the excitement got too much for them out there. It was relatively close sailing with a main group out front and the silver fleet following. The wind came and went on many occasion but eventually after 2 laps for Keith and Maurice and 1 for the rest it all resulted in a win for Keith in the Aero, 2nd Marice in the Contender, 3rd David Plester in the Solo.

The wind was dropping and the fleet was expectant about where we were going to find this elusive wind, well a tacktical decision by the in charge team sent us round Monkstone and then straight back to harbour. A first for me but it was a good course for the conditions and enabled a race to take place.

1st Keith Jones in the Aero, 2nd Maurice in the Contender, 3rd David Plester in the Solo. Thanks again to all the helpers including the trolley pushers and pullers. Tom and Ann on OOD, Terry and Malcolm on the flyer, Rob and Anna Davies on the dory. Racing starts next week at 15.30 and the weather is booked so be there for some exciting and tactical racing.

Friday club sailing.

We held another come and try session on Friday which if the wind had behaved itself would have been a great night, there were though many capsizes but a lot of smiles which cannot be too bad. The now well trained galley team organised some hot dogs and drinks for after so a good club night and a thank you to the Coppet Week helpers on an evening of some testing sailing conditions.

Club Training.

Sail training has started and is now on going with an enthusiastic group of potential sailors braving the warming waters of Saundersfoot Bay.
